About KBF Advisors

We help growing companies escape No Man's Land.

Lead Advisor

Bill Freeborn

I work with founders and growth-stage companies who've built something real — and are ready for what's next. Whether that means scaling, repositioning, or preparing for exit, I bring the experience — and sleeves-up energy — to make it happen.

Building a successful company is an endurance sport. It takes preparation, discipline, resilience, the ability to adjust when conditions change — and the judgment to know when to push and when to conserve energy for what lies ahead.

I know something about endurance. As an accomplished multi-sport athlete, I competed in three IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, finishing twice in the top 100. The lessons learned preparing for and competing at that level have stayed with me throughout my business career.

At KBF Advisors, I bring much the same mindset to my clients. Think of me as part coach, part training partner, and part experienced competitor who's been through the course before. You run the race. My job is to help you prepare for it, navigate the difficult stretches, and finish stronger.

Sometimes the story needs fixing. Sometimes the sales engine needs building. Often, it's about aligning strategy, people, and operations to unlock real value.

I've done this across industries — IT, healthcare, legal tech, cannabis, real estate, and more. In one recent engagement, I led a four-year transformation that doubled revenue, grew EBITDA 5x, and culminated in a successful sale to a national platform in 2025.

Earlier, I helped scale CSC Global (Corporation Service Company) from a 20-person operation into an industry powerhouse. And before that, I helped Canterbury of New Zealand break into the U.S. market, outfitted Australia II for its historic 1983 America's Cup victory, and co-created Canterbury's now-iconic "Three Cs with Kiwi" logo — still in use today.

Today, through KBF Advisors LLC, I serve as an interim executive, board advisor, and trusted partner for the climb ahead. I help founders move from vision to value — while building companies capable of going the distance.

Because whether you're building a business, climbing a mountain, or racing an IRONMAN, the fundamentals aren't all that different:

Prepare well. Pace with purpose. Adjust when conditions change.

And finish strong.

A Foundational Influence

Crediting Doug Tatum

Nearly twenty years ago, I read one of the many business books I've turned to over the years to learn from the experiences, successes — and, just as importantly, failures — of others. One stood apart: No Man's Land: Where Growing Companies Fail, by Doug Tatum.

Doug's book fundamentally shaped the way I think about growing companies and the challenges entrepreneurs face as their businesses move beyond the entrepreneurial stage. His insights have become an important foundation for the work I do with my clients today.

No Man's Land is a must-read for any entrepreneur serious about building and growing a successful business. I have recommended it to countless business owners and have given away more copies than I can remember.

I give Doug full credit not only for the "No Man's Land" concept, but also for many of the ideas and principles that have influenced my thinking and helped shape the direction of my consulting practice. I remain grateful to him for writing a book that, nearly twenty years later, continues to influence both my work and the advice I give my clients.

What Is No Man's Land?

No Man's Land is a dangerous stage where a company is too big to be considered small, but still too small to be considered big.

Growth has stalled, complexity has increased, and the founder or CEO feels trapped — wearing too many hats, watching margins erode, and sensing that the culture and processes that got them here won't get them where they need to go.

It is one of the most critical inflection points in a company's life. Most companies never make it through. KBF Advisors exists to change that.

Common Symptoms

  • Stalled or inconsistent revenue growth
  • Eroding profitability
  • Cultural misalignment and internal friction
  • Founder or CEO wearing too many hats
  • Unclear roles, accountability, and expectations
  • Processes that don't scale or are constantly reinvented

Our Approach

We don't offer generic frameworks or off-the-shelf playbooks. We embed with your leadership team, diagnose the real constraints, and build a tailored path forward — one that aligns your people, your strategy, and your operating model.
